He’s come to kill me.
I’m a user and abuser of my own body. In my darkest hour I sold my soul to the devil and now I must pay the price. With his gun to my head I have no choice but to listen and obey, but I refuse to go down easily. Nothing is stronger than the will to survive. My instincts kicked into full gear the second he stepped into my motel room.
Except when I look at him I see my own heart staring back at me. A history tainted by blood.
I don’t know his name, but I know he wants me. To save myself I’ll sacrifice my sanity. My body. My soul. Something tells me the x-shaped scar that marks his eye is the only escape I have. He is Mr. X: the man who comes to claim my life. Can I save myself before he demands my heart?
WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, breath deprivation, strong language, drugs and alcohol, and graphic violence.
I tend to shy away from darker subject matters just because I want reading to be an escape. When things get hard and violent and mean, I get a little antsy, a little angsty and more than a little freaked out. Therefore, I’m not typically one to pick up a dark romance (that’s not to say I won’t or I haven’t because there are a few that I’ve read and loved) but when I saw the blurb for this book, I was intrigued enough to give it a shot. Having read and enjoyed Clarissa Wild’s Fierce series, I went into this book with an open mind and I came out the other side very happy with what I read. And maybe just a little bit freaked out...
Jay is an addict, a stripper, a whore. One night she comes face-to-face with a man that terrifies and intrigues her. Staring down the barrel of his gun, she has to make a decision. Can she sacrifice her body, her soul and her mind to this killer? Mr X is the evil that removes all other evil from the Earth. His newest assignment brings him to Jay, a reminder of his past and the x-shaped scar that deforms his eye. What length will they both go to survive the other?
This was not a light read in any way, shape or form. The subject matter is dark, depraved and, honestly, made me feel a little dirty reading it. Fair warning, Mr X contains most everything that polite society considers criminal. It’s certainly not the type of book I choose to read on a regular basis and not one I would likely read again for pleasure any time soon. But that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. Because I did. I found the storyline to be interesting and I was both fascinated and repulsed by the fucked-up mess of a relationship between Jay and X. Clarissa Wild created a coupling that was both right and wrong. I definitely had the sense that these two were destined in some crazy way, but it also screamed “Stockholm Syndrome” to me. There was no doubt that this book was about power. Who had it, who used it, who abused it and what the characters were willing to do to hold on to it. There were times when I felt like the story was going in circles, especially when the author was trying to prolong the twist/mystery/reveal, and I had trouble connecting with the characters, but for the most part I found myself wanting to read on and find out how these two people came to be who they are.
Lovers of BDSM will appreciate the hot, albeit violent, sex that Jay and X experience and I have to admire the way Clarissa Wild managed to make their bedroom time seem more sexy than hostile. I wasn’t expecting to find myself in need of a cold shower reading Mr X but I did. And maybe that’s what had me kinda freaked out....
Mr X is a standalone novel, no cliffhanger.
